Some people discover Kenya. Robert Kipkoech Rono was raised by it — and he has spent the better part of two decades learning it, ledger by ledger and lodge by lodge, on his way to sharing it with the world.

He carries a name from the green highlands of Kericho — Kipkoech, the Kalenjin name given to a child born at first light, when the mist still lies over the tea ridges and the day is only a promise on the hills. It is a fitting name for a man who has spent his life reaching for horizons — and helping others reach them too.

His path began not in a safari vehicle but over a ledger. He trained in accountancy at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2008 took his first job as an accounts clerk in the schools of his home county — the patient, unglamorous work of keeping the figures honest. It is a discipline he never left behind, and it is why, to this day, a Ronyeg quotation comes in plain figures, in US dollars, with no surprises.

Hospitality found him at a hotel in Bomet, where for the first time his numbers had faces — guests to be welcomed, not just accounts to be balanced. The work drew him from the highlands down to the coast, as an accountant in Mombasa, and home again as a school bursar in Kericho. Across a decade he came to know every side of a guest business — the kitchen and the front desk, the budget and the booking.

Then, in 2022, he stopped keeping other people’s books and began building his own dream. He founded his first travel company — his step from counting journeys to creating them — and set his sights on the place that had been on his horizon all along: the Maasai Mara. Home remains Sotik, in the cool Rift Valley highlands he was raised in, but his work has carried him deep into the Mara, where he has led safari-camp operations as a chief financial officer and managing director.

With his fellow Co-Director he pours all of it — an accountant’s discipline and a host’s heart — into Ronyeg Kenia Tours and Travels: a Kenyan company, run from Kenyan soil, that treats every guest as someone worth going the extra mile for.

“Journeys beyond the horizon” is not a slogan to Robert. It is the spirit of that dawn name — a homeland that rolls away farther than the eye can follow, and a lifelong wish to take people there.
